Lake Eyre Sunrise vs Sunset | Best Time of Day | Gekko Safari
I get asked this constantly, and the true answer is that they’re different, not better or worse. Which one you prefer depends on what you want out of the day.
Sunset tends to be warmer in feeling. The light turns the salt pink and gold, long shadows stretch out, and the heat of the day is easing. It’s the one I recommend for first-timers. Sunrise is quieter and cooler, often with a stillness that’s hard to describe. The colours can be softer and the air is cleaner, but you’ll be getting up early, and in winter it’s properly cold.
A quick comparison
- Sunset: warmer light, easier timing, better after a long day on the road
- Sunrise: quieter, cooler, often better for still conditions and reflection after rain
- Midday: harsh and bright, but good for seeing the sheer white of the salt
- Cloud: a few clouds usually improve both, a completely clear sky can look a bit flat
If you’ve got time for both, do both. If not, I’d start with sunset and see how you feel.
