Lake Eyre Viewpoints | Halligan Bay and Level Post Bay | Gekko Safari

People picture Lake Eyre as one place you drive up to. It’s not. The lake is enormous, and only a few spots are practical for visitors to reach. Knowing the difference saves a lot of disappointment.

Two names come up again and again: Halligan Bay and Level Post Bay. Both are on the northern part of the lake, within Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park, and both are reached from the Oodnadatta Track via unsealed side tracks. Each gives you a different feel. At one you may be looking at a bright white crust that stretches to the horizon, and at the other you may find the lake edge a bit different depending on recent weather.

What to know before you go

  • Access tracks can be affected by rain, so check conditions first
  • The lake edge can be soft, so listen to guidance on where it’s safe to walk
  • Permits and park entry requirements apply, so check current details
  • Distances are long, and there’s very little shade at either spot

This is one of the strongest arguments for going with a guide. We know which spots are working at the moment, and we’d rather tell you honestly where to stand than let you wander off down a track that’s gone soft.
