Lake Eyre After Rain | Wildflowers and Green Country | Gekko Safari
The outback has a reputation for being red and dry. Most of the time that’s accurate. But after a decent rain, the country around Lake Eyre can change faster than you’d believe.
Seeds that have been waiting in the soil, sometimes for years, germinate. Grasses and small flowers appear on the plains and along creek lines, and the gibber and sand pick up patches of green. Insects and birds follow. It doesn’t last long, and it isn’t guaranteed, which is part of what makes it special.
What to keep in mind
- Rain is unpredictable, so you can’t schedule a green visit with any certainty
- Wet weather can close tracks, so flexibility matters
- Don’t expect lush bush, it’s more subtle than that
- The contrast with the white salt can be striking
If you happen to be here after good rain, you’ll be seeing something many people never do. And if you don’t, the dry country has its own appeal.
