Wildlife Around Lake Eyre | Birds, Reptiles and Small Animals | Gekko Safari
It’s easy to assume nothing lives out here. That’s mostly because the animals are good at not being seen. Many are small, nocturnal or very well camouflaged, and they’ve adapted to heat and scarce water in ways that are worth appreciating.
In practice, the animals you’re most likely to notice are birds, reptiles and the occasional larger animal. Wedge-tailed eagles are common in the open country. Lizards dart across tracks. Kangaroos and emus turn up near stations and along creek lines. After rain, birdlife can increase noticeably.
Where and when to look
- Early morning and late afternoon, when animals are most active
- Around creek lines and waterholes, where there’s more cover
- On quiet tracks away from the main road
- Look for tracks in sand, which tell you what’s been around overnight
Take binoculars if you have them, and ask your guide what to watch for. A lot of wildlife spotting out here is about patience.
