This is a genuinely complicated question and I want to be honest that I’m not a climate scientist — I’m a tour guide who’s spent a lot of time watching this landscape and paying attention to what the actual research says, because it affects how we plan tours and what we tell people to expect.

Here’s what’s reasonably well understood, and where the genuine uncertainty lies.

What We Know About Historical Flooding Patterns

Lake Eyre’s flooding is driven primarily by rainfall in its catchment — the Lake Eyre Basin covering over a million square kilometres of Queensland, the Northern Territory, and New South Wales. Historical records, including Aboriginal oral history and colonial-era observations, suggest the lake has always flooded irregularly, tied to broader climate patterns like El Niño and La Niña cycles rather than a fixed schedule.

La Niña years, which bring above-average rainfall to eastern and northern Australia, are generally associated with a higher likelihood of significant flooding events reaching the lake. This has been the pattern for as long as records exist, well before climate change became a significant factor in scientific discussion.

What’s Genuinely Uncertain

Whether climate change is measurably altering the frequency or intensity of these La Niña and El Niño cycles — and by extension, Lake Eyre’s flooding pattern — is an area of ongoing scientific research rather than settled consensus. Climate models generally suggest increased variability in Australian rainfall patterns under warming scenarios, which could mean either more extreme flood events or more extreme dry periods, potentially both at different times.

What I can say honestly is that in the years I’ve been guiding tours to the lake, I haven’t observed a clear, unambiguous trend in either direction that I’d feel confident attributing to climate change specifically, as opposed to normal decadal variability in a system that’s always been highly variable.

Why This Matters for Trip Planning

Practically speaking, this uncertainty is part of why we’ve always advised against planning a trip specifically around catching a flood event. The unpredictability has always been part of the lake’s character, and if anything, increased climate variability would only reinforce that unpredictability rather than making it more reliable to plan around.

Increasing temperatures more broadly across inland Australia are reasonably well documented, and this affects evaporation rates — meaning that when water does reach the lake, it may not persist for as long as it once did in similar volumes, simply because hotter conditions evaporate it faster. This is a more straightforward and better-supported observation than questions about flood frequency itself.
