How Far Ahead Should You Book a Lake Eyre Tour?
This is a genuinely useful question to ask before you start planning, because the answer affects everything else about how you organise the trip — flights, leave from work, other travel plans built around it.
The Short Answer
Three to six months ahead gives you the best selection of dates. Some specific periods — particularly school holidays and the peak of the cooler season in June and July — can book out considerably earlier than that, sometimes six to nine months in advance for the most popular departures.
Why Timing Varies So Much
Our tours run seasonally, roughly April through September, aligned with the cooler and more comfortable outback conditions. Within that window, demand isn’t evenly spread. July, coinciding with school holidays in most states, is consistently our busiest month and the one that books out earliest. April and September, at either edge of the season, tend to have more availability closer to departure.
If you have flexibility on dates, booking two to three months out is usually sufficient outside of the peak school holiday windows. If you’re locked into a specific date — an anniversary, a specific window of annual leave — book as early as you can, ideally as soon as the season’s dates are published.
What Happens If You Book Late
It’s not unusual for us to have late bookings fill a spot that opened up from a cancellation, so booking closer to departure isn’t hopeless — but your choice of specific dates narrows significantly. If you’re flexible about which week you travel, checking in a month or two out can still work. If you need a specific date, later booking is a real gamble.
Group Size Considerations
Our tours are small groups, typically eight to twelve people. This means individual departures fill up faster than a large coach tour would, simply because there are fewer seats to begin with. A departure that’s half full with two months to go might genuinely sell out within a few weeks if a few groups book together.
Booking for a Gift or Special Occasion
If you’re booking around a specific milestone — an anniversary, a birthday, a retirement — build in extra lead time. Booking six months ahead for a date you can’t move gives you the best chance of securing it, and it also gives everyone involved plenty of time to prepare, organise flights if they’re travelling from interstate, and build anticipation for the trip.
