The Basics: Size and Depth
At its maximum, Lake Eyre covers approximately 9,500 square kilometres — making it larger than Delaware and Rhode Island combined, and one of the largest terminal lakes in the world by surface area. However, it’s extraordinarily shallow. Even in a major flood event, the lake rarely exceeds a few metres in depth over most of its surface, and large sections hold only centimetres of water.
Compare this to the Dead Sea, which sits at around 600 square kilometres but reaches depths of over 300 metres, or the Caspian Sea, which at 371,000 square kilometres dwarfs every other salt lake on Earth but is considered more accurately a landlocked sea than a lake. By surface area Lake Eyre is genuinely significant; by volume it’s extremely modest.
Below Sea Level — One of the Lowest Points in Australia
Lake Eyre sits approximately 15 metres below sea level at its lowest point, making it the lowest natural point in Australia and one of the lower points in the Southern Hemisphere. The Dead Sea, by comparison, sits around 430 metres below sea level — significantly lower, though in a very different geological context. Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat, sits at a remarkable 3,656 metres above sea level, making it almost an inversion of the low-point logic associated with most salt lakes.
Salinity
Lake Eyre’s salinity varies enormously depending on water levels. When dry, the surface salt crust is essentially pure sodium chloride. When flooded, the salinity of the water drops significantly as freshwater dilutes the accumulated salt — which is partly why the flooding events are so ecologically productive, creating conditions where fish and invertebrates can briefly thrive in what is otherwise an inhospitable environment.
The Dead Sea’s salinity sits at around 34 percent — roughly ten times that of ocean water — making it too saline for almost all life. Lake Eyre during a flood event is far less saline and supports a remarkable burst of ecological activity, which is precisely what distinguishes it from the world’s more consistently saline lakes.
What Makes Lake Eyre Unique
The combination of factors that defines Lake Eyre is genuinely unusual among the world’s great salt lakes: it’s a vast, flat, mostly dry expanse that floods unpredictably and infrequently, responds to rainfall events thousands of kilometres away, and transforms temporarily into one of Australia’s most ecologically productive environments when it does fill. It’s a lake that is more defined by its dryness than its water — which inverts the usual logic of what a lake is.
Salar de Uyuni and Utah’s Bonneville Flats share the aesthetic of the vast white salt flat, but neither floods in the same ecological way. The Dead Sea is permanent and hypersaline. The Caspian is essentially a permanent sea. Lake Eyre exists in a category of its own.
