Lake Mungo a World Heritage-listed area of immense natural and cultural significance. It is most famous as the site where the ancient remains of Mungo Man and Mungo Lady were discovered, providing some of the earliest evidence of human ritual burial and modern humans in Australia, dating back over 42,000 years.
Step into Australia’s outback capital, where the rugged beauty of the land meets a rich mining heritage. Broken Hill is renowned for its art galleries, including the iconic Pro Hart Gallery, and its historic mining sites. Experience the ethereal beauty of the Living Desert Sculptures, enjoy panoramic views of the vast outback, and immerse yourself in a community filled with resilience and character.
Just 25 km from Broken Hill lies Silverton, a charming and slightly eccentric outback village. Once a thriving mining town, it’s now a haven for artists, filmmakers, and adventurers.
On the way back to Adelaide, we’ll visit Peterborough, a charming railway town steeped in history. Explore the Steam town Heritage Rail Centre, where you can learn about the golden age of rail travel. This quaint stop offers a nostalgic glimpse into Australia’s transport history.
This carefully curated tour offers something for everyone—breathtaking landscapes, intriguing history, and unique cultural experiences. Whether you’re a history buff, nature lover, or simply looking for an adventure, this trip is not to be missed.
We start our adventure with a 7.00 AM pickup from the Alba Hotel in the Adelaide CBD. Travel through the scenic landscapes of Gawler and the Barossa Valley, then we cross the iconic River Murray to reach the lush Riverland region. Pass through Waikerie, Barmera, and Renmark, known for their vibrant fruit and citrus orchards, before stopping for a delightful picnic lunch by the Murray River.
We continue past sprawling vineyards and fruit farms, arriving in Mildura mid-afternoon. We visit the family-owned Varapodio Olive Oil Farm, renowned for its award-winning oils. Sample their exquisite olive-based products, including salad dressings, mayonnaise, and cosmetics.
Relax at our accommodation before heading to the wharf for a unique dining experience aboard the Paddle Vessel Rothbury. Enjoying a spit-roast carvery dinner while cruising along the serene, floodlit Murray River. Let the tranquillity of the illuminated riverbanks set the perfect mood for the evening.

After breakfast, we journey into the desert landscape and Mungo National Park to explore this extraordinary ancient lakebed environment. We learn the deep cultural stories of the region, including the discovery of the world’s oldest known ritual burials—Mungo Lady and Mungo Man—laid to rest more than 42,000 years ago.
Discover the dramatic Walls of China and learn about the megafauna history of the area. Explore the ancient Willandra Lakes system along with the historic sheep station and impressive shearing shed that serviced the region for nearly 100 years.
Along the way, keep an eye out for a variety of wildlife, including lizards, birds of prey, and colourful parrots such as the Major Mitchell Cockatoo. We return to the lodge in time to watch the sun set over the desert, followed by a hearty and satisfying evening meal.

Wake up feeling rested and refreshed after a peaceful night in comfortable outback accommodation. Today we travel through Pooncarie and onward to Menindee, a small town of around 1,000 people located on the banks of the Darling River and home to the picturesque Menindee Lakes. The town is rich in history and closely linked to famous Australian explorers such as Burke and Wills, Charles Sturt, and Major Mitchell.
After lunch, we continue our journey through spectacular outback landscapes before arriving in the famous mining town of Broken Hill.
Upon arrival, we check into our hotel and prepare for a memorable evening at the iconic Palace Hotel, renowned for its vibrant murals and its starring role in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Those who wish can test their luck with a traditional game of two-up.

We start off the day at the Silver City Mint and Art Centre, featuring The Big Picture, the world’s largest acrylic painting on canvas by a single artist. Then, visit the Pro Hart Gallery, showcasing works by renowned Australian artist Pro Hart and other luminaries like Monet and Boyd.
We step back in time at the semi-abandoned town of Silverton, a popular filming location for classics like Mad Max 2 and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Enjoy lunch at the iconic Silverton Hotel before exploring local landmarks, including the Mad Max Museum and the historic synagogue housing a Judaica collection.
Wrap up our day with breathtaking views from the Mundi Mundi Plains Lookout, followed by a visit to the Living Desert Sculptures. Marvel at 12 sandstone masterpieces created by international artists, set against the dramatic backdrop of Australia’s vast outback.

Enjoy breakfast before retracing the historic railway route that once transported silver, lead, and zinc from Broken Hill to Port Pirie. We stop at Peterborough, a town steeped in railway heritage, to explore its fascinating 3-gauge turntable and WWII-era engine sheds.
Discover Burra, one of Australia’s best-preserved 19th-century mining towns. We learn about its copper mine, a cornerstone of South Australia’s early prosperity, before the town transitioned into a hub for agriculture.
We arrive in Adelaide around 6:00 PM, bidding farewell to new friends and cherished memories from your unforgettable outback journey.
