This comes up surprisingly often in pre-tour conversations. People want to know whether they need to bring their own snacks, whether there are dietary options in remote areas, and what a meal actually looks like when you’re three hours from the nearest supermarket. Fair questions.
Here’s what meals on a Gekko Safari Lake Eyre tour actually look like across the four or five days.
Day One — Adelaide to the Flinders Ranges
The first day involves some stops through the Clare Valley wine region, which has genuinely good food options — small cellar doors with lunch menus, a bakery or two, the kind of regional food that Adelaide’s hinterland does well. By the time we reach the Flinders Ranges in the afternoon, the landscape has shifted dramatically and the accommodation for the night has a dining option for dinner.
Outback Pub Meals
A significant part of eating in outback South Australia happens in pub dining rooms. This is not a compromise — the outback pub is a genuinely distinctive Australian institution, and the meals tend to be honest, generous, and exactly what you want after a long day in the vehicle. Parma, schnitzel, steak, fish and chips. Cold beer. Sometimes a surprisingly good pie.
We stop at Marree Hotel for lunch on one of the tour days. It’s been feeding travellers for a very long time and it has the kind of atmosphere that only comes from decades of exactly that.
Remote Locations and Limited Options
Between some stops — particularly on the Oodnadatta Track section — options narrow considerably. This is part of the point. The remoteness is real and the food reflects it. We carry water and snacks in the vehicle for between-stop moments, and we plan meal stops to align with what’s actually available in each location rather than promising options that don’t exist.
Dietary Requirements
Vegetarian options exist at most stops, though they’re sometimes limited to whatever’s on the pub menu. More specific dietary requirements — vegan, coeliac, significant allergies — need to be flagged when you book so we can plan accordingly. In truly remote areas, the ability to cater specifically is limited, and we’ll be honest with you about what’s manageable before you commit.
