Clare Valley to Coober Pedy Tour | Flinders Ranges Route | Gekko Safari

People think of a Lake Eyre tour as a trip to one place. In reality the lake is one stop on a long route through some very different country, and half the fun is watching the landscape change.

You start in the Clare Valley, green and gentle, with vineyards and old stone towns. Heading north, the land dries out. The Flinders Ranges bring ridges, gorges and wildlife, and further north again the country flattens and opens up towards Lake Eyre. Then there’s Coober Pedy with its underground homes, and Woomera with its rocket range history.

The shape of the trip

  • Clare Valley: a soft start, with good food and wine country
  • Flinders Ranges: ancient ranges, rock-wallabies and big views
  • Lake Eyre: the salt, the scale and the silence
  • Coober Pedy: opal mining and underground living
  • Woomera: a very different chapter of Australian history

Each stage feels different from the last, which keeps the long distances from getting dull. It’s the variety that surprises people.
