How to Visit Lake Eyre From Sydney or Melbourne
Most of our tour groups include people who’ve flown in from Sydney or Melbourne specifically for the trip. It’s more common than people might expect — the combination of a direct flight to Adelaide and a four or five day tour is actually a straightforward way to do one of Australia’s most extraordinary journeys.
Here’s how to make it work logistically.
The Simplest Approach: Fly Adelaide, Join the Tour
Both Qantas and Virgin run regular direct flights from Sydney and Melbourne to Adelaide, typically under two hours. Adelaide is the departure point for all Gekko Safari Lake Eyre tours, so getting yourself to Adelaide is the only logistical piece you need to organise independently.
We recommend arriving in Adelaide the afternoon or evening before the tour departs, rather than the morning of. Tours typically leave early — often 7 or 7:30am — and a tight connection from an interstate flight adds stress that isn’t necessary. Spending a night in Adelaide also gives you the chance to explore the city a little, which has a lot going for it in its own right.
What to Book and When
Book your flights once you’ve confirmed your tour dates. Tour dates on our Lake Eyre tours are fixed departures, so you’ll know exactly which days you need to cover. Leave a day of buffer at the end of the tour before your return flight if possible — if the scenic flight is delayed a day by weather, or any other part of the itinerary shifts slightly, you won’t be scrambling to change flights.
Travel insurance is worth having for interstate trips of this nature. The outback is remote and while our tours are well-organised, having cover for flight changes, medical circumstances, or unexpected itinerary adjustments is sensible.
Where to Stay in Adelaide
The Adelaide CBD has a good range of accommodation at most price points. Anywhere in the central city or close to Rundle Street is well-positioned for early departure — we can advise on where the tour pickup point is when you book so you can choose accommodation accordingly.

The most consistent feedback from interstate visitors is that the trip exceeded their expectations, which were already high. Adelaide surprises people who don’t know it well, and the contrast between the city and what unfolds over the following four or five days is genuinely striking.
