The Rivers That Feed Lake Eyre – and Why They’re Thousands of Kilometres Away

One of the genuinely strange things about Lake Eyre is that the rain that fills it often doesn’t fall anywhere near it. The lake itself sits in one of the driest parts of Australia. The water that occasionally fills it starts as rain in Queensland — sometimes in the tropical north — and travels through a vast river system over weeks or months before reaching the lake.

Understanding this helps explain why Lake Eyre floods are so hard to predict from the lake’s location, and why they feel almost miraculous when they happen.

The Lake Eyre Basin

Lake Eyre sits at the centre of the Lake Eyre Basin, an internally draining catchment covering approximately 1.14 million square kilometres. ‘Internally draining’ means the water that falls within the basin doesn’t flow to the ocean — it flows toward the lowest point, which is Lake Eyre, and evaporates there. The basin is larger than France, Germany, and Spain combined.

Within this basin, several major river systems converge toward the lake. The three most significant are the Diamantina, the Georgina, and Cooper Creek.

Cooper Creek

Cooper Creek is probably the most famous of Lake Eyre’s feeder rivers, partly because of its association with the Burke and Wills expedition of 1860 to 1861, which ended in disaster at Innamincka on Cooper Creek. The creek rises in Queensland and flows southwest through channel country — a vast braided floodplain in southwest Queensland — before entering South Australia and eventually reaching Lake Eyre.

In a big flood year, Cooper Creek can flow for months and contribute enormous volumes of water to the lake system. In most years, it flows intermittently and the water evaporates or soaks in before it gets far. The gap between years of significant flow and years of none is part of what makes the lake so unpredictable.

The Diamantina

The Diamantina River rises in central Queensland and flows south through the channel country, paralleling Cooper Creek to the east. Like Cooper, it can flow strongly in a wet year and barely at all in a dry one. The town of Birdsville in southwest Queensland sits on the Diamantina, and the river gauge at Birdsville is one of the most watched indicators of whether water is heading toward Lake Eyre in a given season.

The Georgina

The Georgina River rises in the Northern Territory near Mount Isa and flows south through the Bedourie area before joining the Diamantina system. It’s the most westerly of the three major feeders and its contribution to lake flooding events tends to be significant in years when the Northern Territory monsoon season is particularly strong.

Why the Journey Takes So Long

These rivers don’t flow in narrow channels like the rivers most Australians are familiar with. They spread across vast floodplains — the channel country of southwest Queensland — moving slowly across flat terrain, soaking in, evaporating, spreading out. A flood that begins in north Queensland in January might not reach Lake Eyre until April or May, having travelled over a thousand kilometres through some of the most remote country in Australia.

This is why watching upstream river gauges tells you more about Lake Eyre’s likely water levels than any local weather forecast does.

What This Means on Tour

When we travel the Oodnadatta Track on our Lake Eyre tours, we’re travelling through the southern end of this vast drainage system. The gibber plains and dry creek beds we pass are part of the same landscape that, in the right year, carries floodwater all the way to the lake. The country makes more sense when you understand the hydrology.
